1:1 Laptop Program & iPads

OLPH Technology Dept

Our Vision for the School Technology Plan:

Technology offers students an avenue to succeed as citizens in a global society in which information is growing at an incredible rate.  It can improve communications, enhance thinking skills, make instruction more efficient and effective, and develop life skills critical to success.  OLPH will incorporate technology as a means of integrating curriculum across subject areas.  Students and educators will be guaranteed opportunities to use technology as an integral part of education.

Why did we need a new Technology Model?

It is no longer enough to focus on technology skills, as it is clear every day that most students have or are quick to acquire these skills.  What still holds many schools back is the continuing separation of technology from the rest of the school curriculum.  Technology must become the transparent component that is integrated seamlessly in all areas of the curriculum.

As The Transformation to Education describes, "Digital learning tools will largely replace textbooks and teacher lectures as a way students access new information.  Technology links students to the world with teachers as their guides and coaches as they explore and experience.  To this end, OLPH proposes the school 1:1 Technology Plan.

1:1 Technology Plan - What is it?

Very simply, the OLPH 1:1 Technology Plan is each student having a laptop PC.  To our current traditional technology model, that is, a dedicated computer lab, classroom PC's and interactive whiteboards, we will also include a dedicated laptop for students in grades 5 through 8.  Each student will be assigned a laptop beginning grade 5 which will remain with them through their 8th grade year.  It will be an integral part of each student's school and classroom learning experience.

Benefits of a 1:1 Technology Program & iPad Mobile Cart

Much research has been done on the effects of the Technology model in education.  Here are some of the findings:

  • Improves results in standardized test scores

On average students who used computer-based instruction scored higher on tests of achievement compared to students without access to computers (James Kulik, "The Impact of Education Technology on Student Achievement").

  • Technical Skills

Students, even at the elementary level, are able to acquire an impressive level of skill with a broad range of computer software.  Although the specific software tools in use will likely change before these students enter the world of work, the students acquire a basic understanding of how various classes of computer tools behave and a confidence about being able to learn to use new tools that will support their learning of new software applications.

  • More Collaboration with Peers and Improved Student Attitude toward Learning

Another effect of technology cited by a great majority of teachers is an increased inclination on the part of the students to work collaboratively and to provide peer tutoring.

Computer Coding

This year we are so excited to have added computer coding to our technology curriculum!  Coding provides a unique way for students to be creative while also exercising their analytical, critcal and problem solving skills.  Collaboration is often encouraged in our classes.  Not only does this allow them to explore other options for "creating/cracking" a code, but it also helps students to demonstrate their leadership skills and take ownership of their projects.

Coding also helps students to think about technology in a new way - that they have the ability to not only be users of technology, but also producers of technology.  It is a joy to watch them discover and work throught their programming exercises and they are equally excited about learning new ways to create/test their code!
