Note: There will be no test in spelling, vocabulary and comprehension on Friday. There will not be any next week either. They do have a story due on Friday. If your child brought his/her story today, his/her rough draft is approved and all that needs done is tweaking. I do need to have the stories along with the rough draft back on Friday. If your child did not bring home his/her story, it will go home tomorrow.
Science - Reread and review Unit D, Chapter 1. We will be having a test on Friday. They should be familiar with what is in the chapter as well as the vocabulary words.
Social Studies - Read pages 170 - 173 and study your vocabulary words. We will have a test on them on Friday, May 18.

Monday, May 14 - There is no homework. If your child brought home his/her books, it is simply to stay a step up on what we are covering and what we will have tests on this week. We did begin the Civil War (Lesson 4) and saw a movie on it. In Science we finished our experiment on who is the biggest wind bag in second grade. Please ask your child for the answer. I hope he/she can answer you. We did review our spelling words by putting them in ABC order. I will check them tonight and send them home tomorrow for studying. We will test on the words Friday. There will be no pretest on Thursday.

Wednesday, May 9 and Thursday, May 10 - because we won't be in school tomorrow, there is no need to send children with book bags, planners, etc.

Cursive - complete pages 29 and 30. They should also study the months and days of the week. We will be having a spelling test on them. It may even be tomorrow. We have been spelling them since day one.

Tuesday - March 27 - We had our first dress rehearsal and everything went fairly well. If your child is not going to take part on Friday night and you have not as yet informed me, please send a quick note so I'll be aware not to expect him/her.
Religion - They should continue to work on the packet I sent home. It is due on Thursday and we will have a test on that as well as all of the Stations of the Cross. The test on the stations will be similar to the ones we did in part. They will not have to fill in the blanks. They will be given all the Stations and have to number them in order.
Science - read pages C54 - C59. We will be finishing this unit soon.
Math - review Packet 17 - there will be a test on Thursday.
Social Studies - Read pages 198 - 203. We are getting to the end of this unit.

Monday - March 26 - Most of the children have brought in their costumes for the "Live Stations". Readers, solders, and Jesus do not need to bring anything in. If your child has not brought in a costume, please try to have it in tomorrow, 3/27/12. We are going to have a dress rehearsal.
Religion - Ms. Maines did it again. I failed to give the children the religion papers I mentioned in the newsletter. They have them today and the completed work is not due until Thursday.
Math - Pages PW 95 & 96 and PS 95 & 96. These are review for Unit 17.
Language Arts - Spelling - 3 times each. Reading - Read "A True Boating Family"
Cursive - we have only two more letters to learn and we will have mastered both upper and lower case letters. They are to do page 25 on one side.

Tomorrow is "Dress Down" day. Even though they have P.E., they can wear pants or shorts and an appropriate top. Information is on the school website and a note went home to those who don't have inner net access. Please remember that they should have shoes that will protect their feet during P.E.

Religion - continue to study the Stations
Math - The students who could not complete their fact tests in 4 minutes, have a sheet or sheets to complete. If they have two (addition and subtraction), they only have to do one side of each. Some have a sheet just for practice even though they did complete their fact test. That sheet is optional. They all have PW 89 and 90. Eight of the students have begun their multiplication facts. We began with 1, 2, 5 and 10 since they are familiar with them. They have a sheet which I would like to see the 1,2,5, and 10's done on at least one side.
Social Studies - Read pages 190 through 195 and review the questions at the end of page 195.

Math - no homework, they worked on range, median and mode today and most of them have a good grasp of it. This concept is something that should be reviewed in the summer. This may be one thing they did not learn in Kindergarten, but will need throughout their school years.

Social Studies - Test tomorrow, 3/6. Study vocabulary words as well as Unit 4. It is good to be able to answer the questions at the end of each group.
Language Arts - Read "Yawning Dawn" and those who have to do spelling words, please write them (in cursive) three times each in a column. NOTE TO PARENTS: The rough draft of the story will be written in class and it will go home on Thursday to be returned completed on Monday, 3/12. All rough drafts will be written in class each week. I'm sorry if my newsletter was misleading and you thought you had to do one this weekend.

I am not sure what the format will be, but they will probably have to match definitions with words. We have worked on drawing a time line of a day, they should be able to draw or fill one in on a test. Books will go home over the weekend.

Religion - They are to study and reread Chapter 16. We have read it in class and we have discussed it. They will have a test on the chapter on Friday. We have discussed the test. It will be identifying miracles and events which are not miracles. They will also have to list miracles from the chapter. They did a worksheet last night and have another one (page 58) to do this evening. I have also given them a list of the "Stations of the Cross". We are going to work on memorizing them. They are to do five at a time and they will be tested both on matching the number to the station and putting the stations in order. Date of test will come later.
Math - PS 85 and 86. They have Packet #15 in their folders. This should be reviewed. There will be a test on Thursday. As you have seen from past tests, they consist of current studies and a review of previous studies.

There is no homework for tonight. I told the students that they could use the time to work on their "Scientific Journals", which I told them to take home. Whether they do or not is up to them.
Please make sure your child is doing something to earn the quarter he/she is placing in the Lenten Booklet each night. These booklets are to be kept at home until March 16. On that day, I will send another booklet home for the next twenty days of Lent. The children are aware that no quarter goes in on any Sunday during Lent. The second booklet should come back on April 16.

Science - Work on your "Scientific Journal". Make sure all the words are spelled correctly. Make sure you have a drawing for each day. On the last page, tell all about the project in at least one paragraph. Don't forget to indent and use proper puncuation. This is not due until Monday, February 27. I will be doubling the grade to make up for low test scores on the Scientific Method test. For every day it is late, ten points will be deducted. It must be in with your child on Monday, February 27.

The following is homework for the week of January 30, 2012 - Because of Catholics' Schools Week, we are working with the 4th grade students in language arts.
