February 1, 2012
Dear OLPH Families:
This year's Read-a-Thon theme is "Aloha, ha, ha! Let's Read and Read Even More" and will take place from February 6 - 12, 2012. The Read-a-Thon Committee is challenging all students at OLPH to read a minimum of 20 minutes per weekday during that week and a minimum of 20 minutes on the weekend. This year, we are also challenging the teachers to join in and read, too! A special prize will be given to the teacher that logs the most hours read across the week. Join in the challenge as OLPH students read and read even more!
Each student is encouraged to read or be read to everyday. Be creative in reading choices: comic books, newspapers, and magazines are great alternatives to books. Make it fun. You can even encourage children to read out loud to a friend or family member!
Every student that participates and reads at least 20 minutes per day will receive daily "prizes" (daily forms must be submitted each weekday). The top reader (highest total number of minutes read) in each classroom will be awarded a special prize at the Family Reading Night. Students will need to return the cumulative reading log on Monday, February 13th, at 8 am. For all the details, please see the Read-A-Thon rules at the end of this letter.
The Read-A-Thon will be punctuated mid-week with a dress-up day and the week will end with two special events.
Wednesday, February 8th is Favorite Character Day
Dress as your favorite character from a book.
Tuesday, February 14th is a Dress-Down Day
Students may dress down (jeans and sweat shirts are allowed also) if he or she participated in the Read-A-Thon and read daily for a minimum of 20 minutes from Feb. 6 – 9th and an additional 20 minutes over the weekend (Feb. 10th-12th).
Wednesday, February 15th is Family Reading Night!
Join us for a fun literacy celebration from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in the Parish Hall.
Dr. Geneva Chavis, a renowned story-teller, retired Professor from Nash Community College and a member of Immaculate Conception, will engage us with stories appropriate for a wide audience. Crafts and games are planned and dinner will be served. The top readers in each classroom, the classroom with the highest number of minutes read during the Read-a-Thon, and the teacher with the most minutes read during the week will all be announced and awarded prize(s). Other cool prizes will be given away to those in attendance.
The schedule for Family Reading Night is as follows:
6:00 – 6:30 dinner
6:30 – 7:00 story telling
7:00 – 7:30 crafts and games, prizes, and book fair
